Eccles U12 travelled to Blackburn with the sun shining and a nip in the air. We love days like this. We were in a round robin with Vale of Lune and Blackburn. The boys respected the minutes silence with dignity.
Vale v Blackburn was a close game with Blackburn winning. The referee was excellent once again…………..now the match report.
Both Blackburn and Vale were kind enough to lend us some players due to being short.
In the first game Eccles were lethargic in the first half with very little passion or panache being shown by the boys. The one bright part being Mad Max M who was everywhere as usual. The scrum gained parity with Vale particular on Joe’s side who was up against the biggest player on the pitch. In fact bigger than the U16 on the next pitch. Anyway Vale ran out winners with two tries. That was the warm up.
In the game v Blackburn the boys go the bit in their teeth with tackles a plenty being made. Captain Archie led from the front making tackle after tackle irrespective of the stature of the opposing player, as one wise old Eccles ex-player said to me exactly what we need in the first team, Mind you Billy’s been wrong before!
There was a thumping tackle from Brendan who hit his man so hard the referee had to halt the game. Max H and Callum also put in tremendous effort in defence, the latter getting a chance to run with the ball.
In an end to end game Blackburn scored first but missed the conversion.
In the second half Eccles moved the ball a bit more and it was a piece of individual brilliance from the Vale player on loan (trialist) who ran 3/4 of the pitch to score. Eccles converted and won the game 7-5.
The defence and movement of the ball has improved with a dominant scrum. We need to work on the line out to avoid slapping down the ball and pressing the opposition when we don’t have the ball.
Thanks to all those who made the long trip to Blackburn especially those with delicate heads…………again.
