Result: Win 50-15
The last match of 2015. What a great start to the season this Eccles U12 squad have had, winning every match except one! Hence, we had high expectations for today. Luke F. was really up for this one, as he had friends on the opposing team.
Eccles didn’t have the best of starts today, conceding an early try to Preston followed by some scrappy play and sloppy passing. Adam offered appropriate festive-themed advice “Pass to the chest boys, not above the head. You’re not fairies.” Consequently, a Christmas miracle occurred; Luke H was the first to show that we had found our form again, with a great catch from an opposition kick and then good passing to Harry on the wing, who promptly scored Eccles’ first try. After a penalty, Lucas put his name on the score sheet with his typical head down and run through the centre solo try. Next was a period of intense pressure from Preston, which saw them getting very close to the try line. In response, impressive work, from the Eccles forwards in particular, denied the opposition and cleared the ball to Harry, who made a super run down the wing, yet was just denied his second try. There was good passing from Will B, great runs from Henry, Harry, Finley, Luke H, Luke F and effective tackling from Duncan, George, Billy, Harvey, Jack, Jake and Will R. The first half ended with a try from George, using his strength to hand off the opposition and then Henry scored after a great run straight through the opposing defence. An evenly matched half ended to Eccles’ advantage, 20-5. Preston failed to find a way through after their try in the first five minutes.
In the second half, Eccles put in an extremely strong whole team performance. The boys did make some handling errors, but always worked hard to win back the ball. Preston had some spells of pressure, but great defending and concentration form Eccles prevented Preston from getting anything further on the score sheet. Sarah continued her night shift to cheers from the side lines, tending to an injured Billy, who was quickly back on his feet, giving his all and scored a try. Lucas scored another try and made a try saving tap tackle. Will B. put in a great kick, which cut through the opposition and was chased down by Lucas and George, the latter getting his second try. Jack was strong in the mauls and Luke F. made a strong tackle, subsequently picked up the ball and scored a great try in the corner.
A thoroughly enjoyable adrenaline-busting match.
Well done boys. We are looking forward to watching you develop in 2016.
