On a typical November morning, we conquered the fog on the motorway and country roads (some of us on petrol reserves) to reach our opponents in Ormskirk.
The boys, being unbeaten so far this season, were looking for another win. After a shaky first five minutes, Billy’s strong tackle forced the opposition knock on; the ball was swiftly collected by Harvey, resulting in the first try for Eccles. The boys then started to play with determination and discipline. Lucas caught and used his strength to power across the try line. After a bad knock to Jake’s head and a substitution, there was a good spell of effective driving play from the forwards. Billy and George were on fire and dominating their opposition numbers; similarly, we witnessed brilliant inter-passing play. Finley did well to draw the penalty, which was taken quickly, allowing Henry to get the next try. The first half culminated with an array of players passing the ball successfully; George finding space to run through to score his try and Lucas scoring his second try, using his rugby league sprint forward.
The second half proved to be as successful as the first. Jake was back on, moving the ball quickly and recovered from the earlier knock. Billy was first to add to the score sheet with his quick feet, picking up the ball and taking it over the try line. There was a phase of strong tackling from George, Will R, Finley, Reece and Jack, resulting in a sensational run from Henry, adding his name to the try scorers. Duncan was next, using his sheer strength to drive the ball across the try line, with two of the opposition still attached. Likewise, there was a spell of good passing out to the wings from one side to the other, resulting in Nathan speeding down the line to score his first try. The final try was again Nathan, from a very unselfish pass from Billy.
During the last ten minutes, Ormskirk saw a bit more of the ball, but didn’t make it through to put points onto the scoreboard.
Overall, once again, an outstanding whole team performance. The fog and lack of visibility seemed to enhance our play – those Jedi mind skills in action for a second time this season! Adam, James and Steve better look out for that England coaching ‘phone call.
