Today’s match was a tale of two halves. In tough conditions with heavy rain and with mud underfoot, the boys were already soaked through after the warm up. Nonetheless, Eccles started strongly with good pressure and an early try from Lucas. There were strong tackles from George, Billy and Luke F, ground making runs from Henry and good hands from Finley and Nathan. Will B put in a great run and put the ball down in the corner, only to be disallowed. Eccles had the upper hand for the majority of the first half, succeeding in finding the gaps in Moor’s defence and culminating with a second try for Lucas, who again used his strength well. In the closing minutes, Moor put in some good passes and scored in the far corner.
The second half, initially, was more evenly matched. Moor were, however, the first to score. Eccles fought back well and we were still hopeful for another win when George ran from Eccles’ 5 metre line, handing off the opposition, to score his try.
Unfortunately, the win was not to be. Eccles soon looked weary, cold and tired. Had there been too many late nights and chocolates over the holidays? The boys looked to have lost the fire in their bellies, in spite of positive encouragement from the side lines and shouting from Billy. There was sloppy play, missed tackles and poor support of the man with the ball. Moor scored three consecutive tries, kicking well and running straight through the Eccles defence. It was frustrating to watch, as we know the boys can play much better.
This was a lesson learnt and, in the end, a deserved win for Moor. We have to play with full effort until the end, no matter how cold and wet we are. Now is the time to pick ourselves up and show our next opponents what we are really made of.
