It was a bright, sunny and still autumnal morning; perfect conditions for our home match against Adlwinians and all refreshed after the extra hour in bed. James had again worked his magic getting the match organised for the boys.
The opposition started strong and we thought, after going a try down early on, that we were going to get a good beating. However, the boys responded with the good spirit and determination we have become accustomed to seeing over recent weeks. Finley showed good hands catching from a high kick, passing to Reece, who made ground with a strong run forward, then passing to Duncan, who used his strength to drive over the try line. It was then all even. The boys, gaining in confidence, started to dominate the game until the half time whistle. Reece, again, was making lots of ground powering through the defence, Finley with a great catch and run forward and Billy with a hard tackle and then steal, setting up a try for Lucas. There was good defensive play from the forwards, plus quick passing from Jake and Will to Sam, who dummied the opposition numbers to score a try.
After the restart, there were a few missed tackles, resulting in Aldwinians putting pressure on and scoring two tries; then again in adversity, the boys worked well as a team, with some good passing and Harry making two crucial tackles. The training sessions and coaches’ efforts are really starting to pay dividends. There were further tries from Lucas, Billy, Will, Luke H, Luke F and George during a spell of the game which Eccles controlled.
Overall, this was a solid performance in which the development of the players was clear to see. A squad of 12 played the whole match; every player worked extremely hard.
The quality of Andrew’s refereeing was again commended by parents on the side lines, in particular, the way he takes the time to explain his decisions to the boys of both teams.
