The U9s travelled to Trafford on a cold blustery Sunday morning to play 2 mini matches against Ashton-on-Mersey, and then the hosts, Trafford. After an early start, the boys had to wait over 45 minutes in wintery conditions before they could play their first game, but the coaches kept the boys’ spirits up by putting them through their paces with some passing and tackling training.
The boys started slowly against Ashton, quickly falling behind to a try on the very first attack. However, Eccles were quickly back on track with a hard fought try from Connor, some excellent passing in the build up allowing Connor to power over the line.
Eccles fell behind again twice, at 2-1 and then 3-2, before great equalising tries from Luke F (2-2) and then Matthew (3-3) made the score even with just minutes to play. It was then left to a brilliant try from Will B to win the game for Eccles in the final minute. The team passed the ball from right to left with pace leaving Will with space to run into, and he raced over the line to seal the game for Eccles.
Match Result: Eccles 4 v 3 Ashton-on-Mersey
With just a few minutes to grab a breath and a drink, Eccles kicked off their second match against the hosts Trafford.
Eccles fell behind 0-2 to 2 quick tries, before pulling one back with another try from Matthew with another fine run. Trafford’s 2 try cushion was quickly restored, before Matthew capped a brilliant display with his 3rd try of the morning to bring the score back to 2-3.
As Eccles pushed for an equalizing try, Trafford broke away to score a 4th try, and with just a 2 minutes left, there seemed no way back for Eccles. However, the boys never gave up and George scored a third try for Eccles, placing the ball over the line after a brilliant determined run that carried him through the Trafford backline. A great moment for George, celebrating his debut for Eccles with a great try-scoring display.
There wasn’t enough time for Eccles to score another to tie the game, but another good display from the boys culminating in a fine morning’s performance.
There were some great performances from the boys, with Connor’s determination in the tackle, and Harry’s fast and forward running, but the Man of The Match award undoubtedly belonged to Matthew for his three tries and great all-round display.
