U9s v Liverpool St Helens – 7th October 2012

The Under 9s welcomed Liverpool St Helens (LSH) to Eccles for their first home game of the new season. All the boys seemed very excited at the prospect of taking on the visitors on what turned out to be a sunny, mild and dry Sunday morning.

Eccles started fantastically well, setting the tone early on for what was to be a great first half performance. Eccles raced into an early 2-0 lead with tries from Luke H and Duncan. After some early brave tackling from Will R and Finley, LSH knew they were in for a tough game. Eccles never let the visitors settle and were pressing extremely well, throwing themselves into tackles at every opportunity.

The boys produced some great rugby in the first half, with Henry and Connor supporting the try scorers with some excellent tackling. Henry got himself onto the scoresheet with a great try, well supported with some positive attacking runs from Will B and Jake. At the end of the first half, Eccles lead 5-1.

The start of the second half saw some Eccles substitutions, the coaches making good use of the sizeable U9 squad, with all the boys itching for a piece of the action. LSH  made some changes of their own and mounted a brave comeback to make what turned out to be a very exciting second half. Eccles continued to score tries with Finley scoring twice and Duncan adding his second of the game.  The boys worked well as a unit and continued to tackle well, Matthew, Luke F and Jack all doing their bit with great support play and running. Eccles were starting to move the ball around really well, making it difficult for LSH to gain possession, with some great passing from Joe, Harry and Robert as they moved the ball speedily across the pitch.

As LSH clawed the score back to 7-7 towards the end of the second half, late tries from Will R and a super solo effort from Will B, secured a great 9-7 victory for Eccles. This was without doubt Eccles’ best team performance to date, and it was hard to pick out any one individual player as Man of the Match. However, the award deservedly went to Finley for his two great tries, fantastic support play and determined tackling.

A great start to the season for the U9s which we hope will continue into the coming matches, starting next with an away trip to Leigh on Sunday 21st October.
