The U9s hosted a talented Leigh side that had recently defeated Wigan with some ease, and a tough match was anticipated.
It’s usual for the U9s to make a slow start and adjust into a game, so it was a pleasant surprise to see us take an early lead, with Luke H taking hold of the ball after a scrum and placing over the line for a 1-0 lead.
Leigh then started to take a foothold in the game and with some excellent controlled passing and agility in their running and movement, they restricted Eccles to few chances, with much of the first half spent in the Eccles half where the boys had to defend in numbers. Leigh were just that little bit faster, controlled, agile and determined, and there first half superiority showed as they raced into a 6-1 lead. However, Eccles had the last word of the first half, with George scoring a try to take the half-time score to 6-2 to the visitors.
The boys were not to be put off for the second half, and came out determined to keep Leigh at bay and to force some more attempts into their opponents half. Leigh were quick off the mark and were the first to score, two quick tries taking the score to 8-2.
However, Eccles persisted and pulled two tries back immediately to give some hope of a comeback. Harry scored Eccles’ 3rd try with a great weaving run, which was quickly followed by a trademark run from defence from Eccles’ own Billy Whizz, Will B.
The boys kept going, with some brilliant determined tackling from Henry, Connor and Will R in particular, but with all the boys making a great contribution and making a real game of it.
The Man of the Match trophy was awarded to George for a great display of effort and tough tackling in addition to his first half try.
