U7s Vs Sedgley Park – Home – 28th September 2014

This week we have a number of firsts for the season: the first match – a home game to boot, Under 7s and Under 8s split into relevant groups and refereeing for Lee and Gav. In addition we had five players making their competitive debut with Guy, Ben, Flynn and Finley who have attended at least one previous session and Leyton (a big Eccles welcome!!!) who had a true baptism of fire on his first ever session. All in all a real hectic day for the coaches.

For the first time this season we had numbers at U7s and therefore matched Sedgley Park in creating two teams.

Lee took one of the teams, “the vets” that consisted of Michael, Peggy, Sandy, Tyler and reports as follows:

Whilst it’s the taking part that counts, we did win both games by a clear margin, with scores of 12-7 and 11-4 to Eccles.

Clearly all the hard work in training has paid off with strong defensive lines, quick passing and lightning runs into space.

Every player scored a try, and there was excellent teamwork with good communication. Michael was top try scorer with his speed, and Sandy and Tyler key players with their strength and power holding the defensive lines.

Peggy was our secret weapon and Sedgley Park were no match for her brains and spatial awareness in controlling the rest of the Eccles team.

The other team, “the newbies”, was managed by myself and contained Finley, Flynn, Josh (the only vet!!!) and Leyton.

In the same words as Lee before, “Whilst it’s the taking part that counts …” (anyone buying this?) we also were victorious in both games although I couldn’t tell you the precise scores (am a bloke and can only do 1 thing at once … refereeing and counting are two separate activities!) but would guess that we won by a solitary try in both games!

To say that three of the four took part in their first ever game they all did fantastically well. Josh A, the experienced campaigner of the team, was as vocal as I have ever heard him and took on a captain’s role marshalling the defensive line and put in some amazing line breaks to score on numerous occasions. We did have a few giddy moments though but even so a great performance.

Flynn and Leyton took turns in running in tries, both demonstrating pace, power, balance and agility throughout both games.

Finley, who in week two was shy, timid and would not take part adorned the field in this newbies team. Did he shyly pick up the ball and stand still … no, did he timidly try and take Sedgley tags … No, was he just mulling about and not taking part … NO. He took up the ball with confidence surging and side stepping through the Sedgley line to score, he ferociously ripped the Sedgley tags (and politely gave them back) and in words from his dad … “he loved it”

Well played both U7 teams.

STAR OF THE WEEK. For Lee’s team, “Captain Super” Pegs is back with a vengeance. Not content with simply organising the team and orchestrating the Sedgley demise she put in a few blistering tries down the wing. Well done Peggy.

For my team, everyone played exceptionally well but as I have to pick a player, my STAR OF THE WEEK goes to someone who proved me totally wrong (no not my wife) … The new tiger of Eccles (no excuses next week) … well done Finley. Congratulations.

Is it me or are these reports getting longer?????????????????????

Thank-you to all those who took part in the fundraising over the last two Sundays. This week’s winner of what was a full bottle of wine (wasn’t claimed on Sunday so now is an empty bottle) is Louise (Tyler’s Mum). Congratulations.

Sunday is the Rossendale tournament. I hope you have all seen the email with the details, in summary …

1. Early start, games start at 10:00 and could do with being there at least 20 mins earlier to get organised.
2. There are supposed to be 16 teams each at U7s, U8s and U9s – Parking will be a nightmare
3. It may (its Rossendale … I mean “will”) be cold/wet as the weather is due to turn at the end of this week.
4. Could be on grass or all-weather pitch so would bring boots and trainers just in case
