Eccles Under 7s welcomed Wigan to Gorton Street for the last game of 2013. As usual we were blessed with numbers and yet again the weather. Wigan were fewer in number and we had a number of Eccles volunteers (named in the report below) turn out in Wigan colours. A big Eccles welcome to Ollie on his first session at the club.
Team A consisted of Harry, Louis, Michael, Ollie, Owen, Peggy, Tyler managed by myself.
One game only this week split into thirds (who needs rules!). A special mention to Louis who volunteered to be a honorary “Pie Eater” and line up against his team mates.
The game was a very even affair, with tries scored at each end. Louis was outstanding for Wigan running in a number of tries in quick succession. Ollie, in his first ever game, was a little bewildered and asked “what do I do”. I answered “get the ball, run and score a try” and he did just that! Amazing (Martin, I am starting to believe you that they do listen … well some of them). Michael was in the thick of things stepping off both left and right feet to seemingly score at will.
Peggy (welcome back- we missed you!!!) caught the Wigan defence napping not once, not twice but three times to claim a hatrick. Both Owen and Tyler also came up with tries.
My STAR OF THE WEEK is Harry. I only have one word to describe his performance … AWSOME. In defence his tagging was spectacular, he scored as many tries as anyone else (and would have been more but for the harsh referee bringing play back on three other occasions). Two of his haul of tries came from excellent support play, following breaks from Michael and Peggy, taking the quick offload to score. Congratulations and well done.
The most pleasing aspect of this weeks performance was the desire to take the ball. At every restart with Eccles ball, all the team were wanting the first pass even to the point of sulking if it wasn’t their turn. I think we now need a rota system and a stats person to make sure all is fair!!!
Team 1 consisted of Archie, Ben, Lewis, Lucas, Max, Mitchell, Reece, Zac managed by Martin.
Special thanks to Archie and Mitchell who played both games for Wigan who were short on numbers and both played brilliantly
The first game was edgy in the opening minutes with both teams showing excellent defensive organisation and tagging. Both teams came close to scoring but just knocked on at the crucial moment or stepped into touch ( referee was being a stickler today)
Eccles soon got into their stride and managed to match a very good Wigan side try for try, with efforts from Ben through the middle and Reece the flyer down the wing. Also some great tagging from Lucas and Zac and further tries ensured the scores were (almost ) even at the final whistle.
The second game was pretty much as the previous one with 2 evenly matched teams playing some great rugby in both attack and defence. As tiredness started to kick in Max started to use great vision and spot players standing in space out wide, which led to a tries for Zac, Reece and Lucas as Eccles started to see more and more spaces out wide. Some great runs from Max, Lewis and Ben kept the crowd entertained with some excellent rugby all round… well done boys.
For outstanding bravery in the face of adversity (well bumps and bruises) and a glowing report from Martin (plus one of the parents, not his own before anyone asks) Reece gets STAR OF THE WEEK
Please be aware that there is NO training session next week as a white bearded man in a red suit is on his way (but only if you have been good!!). Training will resume on Sunday January 5th at 10:30
On behalf of Martin and myself, I would like to thank you for all your support during the first half of the season. The crowd was certainly roaring for both teams this weekend. May I also take this opportunity to wish you all a fantastic Christmas and a great new year and see you all on January 5th.
Sean, just in case, it’s a training session at home on Sunday 5th January starting at 10:30 😉
