I hope you all had a great Christmas break and I wish you all a happy new year.
A cold but dry start to 2014 training and numbers were slightly down from the usual 15. Martin and Archie were both “under the weather” as was Joel and Mitchell. As usual, the session was a mix of drills and games.
This week’s drills concentrated on extending the pop pass drills so that the receiver runs onto the ball rather than stand static awaiting the pass. The drills themselves were executed well but no evidence was found in the game at the end of the session!
We also looked at how to pick a ball up, protecting it within a wide leg base. Whilst this is not essential technique for tag rugby (under 7s and 8s) it will be used in full contact. More of the same will be gradually introduced over the coming weeks although we may leave tackling until next year even though there was a very enthusiastic “can we do tackling” from some (Ben!!!!)
In the games, Tyler was named the ultimate super villain and I think the official refereeing the end of the session game was also a villain. Imagine letting a player score when he only has “ONE TAG” (so I was told/shouted at by most of the green team) on his belt. Still commenting on the official … who invented the rule of turning the ball over if you throw a long pass when a much easier/close pass is available! Tut! Tut!
In the action there was some excellent running from Ben and Lewis, a fantastic body swerve from Louis allowing him to score in the corner. Lucas also popped up with a number of short range tries.
STAR OF THE WEEK goes to Max who was always hungry for the ball and full of running.
Lots of effort this week and with the exception of a few, concentration was extremely good. Lets see if we can keep this up till the end of the season.
Next week is another training session from 10:30.
