The Eccles Under 16s entered the field as proud winners of the Lancashire Development Plate against a team who, although less experienced than Eccles, were about to move up to Senior Colts level and were certainly not short on talent.
Eccles were lightening quick out of the blocks and raced to an early lead with Tries from Harry C and Tanny K. Matt W picked up all the extra points from the Tee to give Eccles a fourteen point advantage inside the first 20 minutes. Wythenshawe reacted well with a breakaway Try from Leon S but were soon pegged back as Kieron R crashed over the line leaving Matt W the simple task of closing out the first half with a nonchalant kick but not before Chris’tle had the chance to flash his tranche de fromage at Matt for a high tackle – not as high as Joey Eccles’ tackle at the moment though!
Eccles 21 – 5 Wythenshawe
Eccles started the second half a little slower than the first and conceded another Try to Leon S on the break to bring Wythenshawe within nine points of Eccles. This seemed to be the prod that the lads needed. They burst to life and dominated the rest of the second half in the manner in which they had the first.
Ross A was first to score with a fantastic run that was streamed live to Barcelona by Karen Acton who 24 hours prior, couldn’t get FaceBook to work on her phone. That is one heck of a learning curve!!
Matt W did the honours for the extra 2 points. Obviously!
Rob S showed a clean pair of heals to the Wythenshawe lads as he ran in Eccles fifth Try of the day, scoring in right in the corner. Matt W again with the brilliant conversion.
The scoring was concluded with the completion of a couple of hat-tricks. Leon S showed why he plays at the highest level representing both Sale and Lancashire at Under 17s with his third and Wythenshawe’s final try of the day. Harry C scored Tries either side of Leon’s to complete a hugely impressive days work.
Eccles 47 – 19 Wythenshawe
What a great way for the lads to close out their time playing Junior Rugby and how fitting that the lads lined up against Junior Colts on the day they should have been playing Rossendale!

Eccles Men of the Match
Players Choice – Harry C
What is there to say about Harry’s performance today – a hat trick of tries and each one as good as or better than the previous. A fantastic way for Harry to complete the season as Eccles top try scorer. Harry has been a consistent performer all year and over recent weeks seems to have peeked with a number of outstanding performances
Coach Choice – Joe R
A fantastic performance from Joe today. He made countless tackles, carried the ball dozens of yards of which many were forward yards, lead a competitive line-out and almost scored one of his trademark kick and runs that have almost come off so many times the season. The search for Joe’s cherries following the early line-out lift will go on long into the evening and may require specialist intervention.
Parent Choice – Jack W
A close call between a couple of lads today but the very deserving Jack W picks up todays parents EMoM for a fabulous performance on the wing for Eccles. Always wanting the ball, Jack made a number of powerful marauding runs down the wing, gaining huge amounts of ground for Eccles. His performance should have been capped off by at least one if not two tries but on both occasions he was thwarted by some terrific last ditch defending from our visitors. Without doubt the best performance of the season from Jack today, saving his best until the very end of the season, just like Sergio did a couple or so years back
Great to see the baby faced Coach James today looking significantly less hirsute than in recent weeks
A massive thanks to Christopher Lee for his swan song performance today. Chris has refereed many of our games over the last few years and signed off from default refereeing our junior games with a typically canary like performance. His enthusiasm for the laws of the game (including some that no one has ever heard of), fabulous outfits and a quality whistle has long been the butt of my jokes. Thanks for all your hard work and good humour Chris.
Most of the lads came away from the game unscathed; Max R picked up an injury which seemed to make his hand go numb (every cloud though eh Max); and Josh G came away from the game looking like the stunt double for Kung Fu panda.
Brad P popped down on his way to cricket to see his Eccles comrades get the game going – thanks for popping in Brad
Well done to James F and Oliver W for putting in a full shift in the first and second halves respectively as they donned the quartered shirts of Wythenshawe to ensure we had even numbers for the game.
Many thanks to Sam Simpson and the lads of the Wythenshawe Community Rugby Union Club. All the very best for next season.
