U15s v Huddersfield

It was a trip down memory lane for us all today as Eccles U15s partied like its 2012, welcoming in the New Year with a fairly forgettable performance against a very powerful Huddersfield side who adapted far more quickly to the horrendously wet conditions.

The first half was a bit of a blur for Eccles as Huddersfield ran in four tries and were deservedly ahead at half time by 24 – 0. Highlights of the Eccles first half performance included some fine defensive work from Brad P and Joe R; powerful running from Rob J, Ellis P and Cameron B. The downside of the half was some poor decision making by the lads, failing to see when a pass is on, passing when there is a better option available; poor support to the man with the ball, handling errors etc – very Eccles 2012.

Half Time 0 – 24

The second half was much better for Eccles with Matthew W going over after a long chase to score a try for Eccles however this was cancelled out by Huddersfield as they converted their only try of the half to secure their well earned victory.

Full Time 5 – 31

Terrible playing conditions but both teams played the game in the true spirit of the game. There was some fierce tackling from both sides but our guests edged the game with Eccles failing to make the most of their periods of possession.

On the upside if this had been 2012 the defeat would have been by a catastrophic scoreline. The lads did extremely well to contain Huddersfield in the second half, only conceding a single breakaway try. The lads showed tremendous character which will need to be demonstrated for the full game next week in our Blacksticks fixture away at Blackburn RUFC

Many thanks to our visitors who travelled over from the ‘dark side’ of the Pennines to sunny Eccles, hopefully we will get an opportunity for a return fixture.

Notable Mentions

A bump to the head for Harry C saw his game come to a premature conclusion within the first 20 minutes, Cameron B had to be carried off towards the end of the second half having suffered an injury to his knee ligaments, Joe R saw his game cut short with a knee to the neck and Josh G had to be replaced when he got mud on his nose. Fingers crossed that all these injuries will be remedied in time for next weeks Blacksticks fixture. Good luck with the face wash Josh xx

A little like Louis van Gaal on Saturday evenings, Coach Kevin found himself on poop scoop duties prior to kick off. May have found you a new career path Kevin

Martin Parkinson generously refereed the game for us today, thanks for that Martin. His performance was closely monitored by Chris ‘the whistle’ but I for one though he had a good game, stepping in on a couple of occasions to inspect the lads handbag collections; a collection that Joe R ran on from the bench to add to, only to be verbally dragged back by Coach James.

Matthew W had a John Terry moment in front of the posts today as he put his conversion wide – I had to mention this as its a bit of a Halley’s comet occurrence. No doubt he’ll be back to his consistent best next week

Once again the injured Alex T turned up looking very frustrated, but he stuck around to perform water boy duties for his team mates. Well done Alex
