U14s v Macclesfield

Unfortunately in my haste to get to todays fixture I left my notepad and pen at home and so, from memory….

A great turn out for Eccles today with 15 or our 19 strong squad arriving on a bitterly cold morning in leafy Cheshire for our away fixture at Priory Park, the home of Macclesfield RUFC

Playing into a light breeze, Macclesfield got the match under way as Eccles lined up with a strong 15 but with no substitutes available for what was to be a tough encounter.

The Eccles lads maintained their 100% record of forgetting within seconds of Kick Off everything Coaches Kevin & James have drilled into them over the season. However to be fair to the lads they started well and the first 20 minutes were very even with both sides taking the opportunity to press forward and defend.

Eccles opened the scoring with a fantastic counter attacking try. From a position where Eccles were defending deep inside their own half Chea appeared with the ball and broke through the Macclesfield forwards, he tucked the ball tight under his arm, put his head down and sprinted the full 3 mile length of the pitch avoiding a last gasp tap tackle to score right under the posts 0-5.

Although carrying the thigh injury he picked up over Christmas (playing FIFA 15) Matthew W picked up the additional two points from the conversion.

0-7 and Eccles we’re playing some of the best rugby that the U14 lads had done in a long time.

A break from Matthew W would have extended the Eccles lead but for some terrific last gasp defending from Macclesfield’ the ball and Matthew being pushed into touch just short of the try line.

Macclesfield were quickly back in the game with a try in the corner which proved too difficult to convert and a second followed soon after to leave the score at half time 12-7.

The second half was difficult for Eccles as they struggled playing into a hurricane like wind and against an extremely well drilled side. In the end, despite some great endeavour and huge heart, Eccles were to concede a further four tries to end the game 38 – 7.

Key moments of the second half for Eccles included a number of good runs from Brad, Chea, Matthew and Rob; late injuries to Rob and Matthew; another ‘almost’ try when 1st Chea, then Alex and then Joe took turns to drive at the try line but the Macclesfield defence held strong; some more ladies accessories from Handbag Dan.

I think that the loss of my pad saved me (and you) from a huge match report as I feel like I ought to have mentioned every player in this report! The vote for Chea was unanimous but there were lots of players today who really deserved a mention (see squad below – everyone played well)

Our opposition we’re a great side but every Eccles lad played their part, many playing out of position. This was a fantastic game to watch, both teams battled hard throughout the whole game but Eccles tired during the second half. Although ahead at the time, the loss of Matthew W and Rob S gave Macclesfield a significant numerical advantage and there was no way back for Eccles at this Point. The result was a fair one but the scoreline misrepresents how close these two sides were to one another for much of the first half and parts of the second. Well played the Under 14’s of Macclesfield and Eccles for demonstrating some great rugby.
