U10s v Broughton 24th November

Eccles v Broughton (home)  Sunday 24th November

The U10s lined up for a home game versus Broughton a bit thin on the ground, with many of the squad away.

It wasn’t the greatest start from Eccles, as Broughton scored the opening try straight from the kick off with barely 10 seconds on the clock. What was particularly disappointing was that we had failed to make any sort of attempt to tackle.

The disappointment was short-lived however, as Eccles brought the scores level directly from the restart, Luke F jumping on the ball as Broughton lost possession on the try line. Luke F had made a lively start and his efforts were rewarded with his second try, to put Eccles ahead.

With much of the focus in training on improvements in tackling, Broughton’s second try was a copy of their first, with the tall forward cutting through the Eccles backline like a hot knife through butter!

However, Eccles soon  took control of the match and took a 4-2 lead thanks to tries from George (a strong, driving run from the centre) and Will B after a great long pass out from the scrum from Jake.

Broughton pulled the score back to 4-3, before the introduction of Calvin from the U9s squad – he had been on the pitch barely a minute when he extended the lead to 5-3.

Some great passing across the whole team, from Henry, Joe, Jake and Harry brought a try for Luke H, and it was very pleasing to end the first half with a commanding lead and playing well.

The second half started as the first had ended, Calvin scoring his second try of the game with a fantastic skilful run from the half-way line.

It was a lead that Eccles never looked like conceding and they always looked like they had more tries in them. Broughton scored again, shortly before a hard-fought try scored from Jake. Broughton scored an easy try again to reduce the deficit, but whenever Broughton scored, it was inevitable that Eccles would score again. Jake scored his second of the match, after George made a great tackle on the Broughton back line, leaving Jake to pounce.

Broughton had a great 3 or 4 minute spell of possession but Eccles were defending and driving them backwards magnificently, with George leading them on with his trademark Braveheart roar! However, to their credit, Broughton did eventually break through to score, to bring the scores back to 9-6.

George restored Eccles’ 4 try advantage with his second of the match shortly before the end, but Broughton had the final word, scoring their seventh try with the last move of the game.

A great performance on the whole, and a great result. Some great play especially from Luke F, George and Jake – Jake was awarded with the man of the match trophy for his hard work and great, accurate passing.

Result: Eccles 50 v 35 Broughton
