Pre-Final Thoughts

Now I don’t normally get the chance to give you my pre-match thoughts. However I’ve decided this time to share them with you all. And for a very good reason.

Last night Billy had the unenviable task of announcing the team for Sunday’s final. Unenviable because he knew he was breaking the hearts of four of the players. Four lads who have done a great job this season and for no fault of their own have missed the cut.

In some ways I’m glad I wasn’t there as I would have struggled to keep my composure, I’m feeling it hard even know writing these notes.

I know all about this type of pain and disappointment, missing out on playing in a final at Twickenham due to a badly timed injury.

All I can say to the four lads is sport is all about highs and lows. It’s how we respond, both on and off the pitch, to the lows that make the highs so enjoyable and give you the right to feel a sense of pride in overcoming adversity.

To the remaining twenty two players chosen, some of whom will not even get on the pitch, you now have a lot to live up to. You are not just representing Eccles RFC on Sunday, you are playing for a whole lot more. OK your playing for Billy, Gaz and Paul, you’re playing for yourselves, the lads on the pitch and on the bench. But most of all you’re playing for the four lads who missed the cut.

It’s down to everyone who gets the chance to take the field to make the pain felt by the four lads worth it by coming back with something. And the only way to do that is give 200% effort in both body and mind.

So good luck, give it your all and remember the four.
