Difficult to work this match out for at he beginning it seemed is seemed that Stockport would run away with it
then appeared Eccles were in command before a frantic finish where it was anybody’s settled matters.
The opening period was a nightmare for the thirds an Eccles pass back was deflected by a home hand but not seen
but should have been cleared but was fumbled on the goal line allowing a simple touchdown .This was quickly followed by a try a home try in the corner
plus another when a clearance kick was sent back with interest forcing a 10 metre scrum from which Stockport forced their way over.
17-0 down with the home scrum so dominant that Eccles were getting no useful ball a tanning was on the cards.
The matched then turned on its head for from a tap penalty in his own half Sion Rowlands fought his way through the home ranks
to set up Wes Harrison who scored under the posts and then converted. Eccles repeated the dose with a similar effort as Tom Wilson took the tap before
feeding Nick Hageman who flew 50m to score with Tom adding the extras.Though still dangerous and strong in the forwards Stockport’s confidence had been
shaken their Achilles heel had been exposed an inability to stop straight running in the wider channels.A rare ball from a scrum saw Eccles make progress
before Pete Heseltine found the gap and touched down for a barely believable 19-17 interval lead.
The second half was a blur of action a both sides counterattacked the length and breadth of the pitch with first blood to Stockport moving the ball
from line out to score in the corner from a decidedly forward pass .A long drop out was well fielded by Rowlands who again worked his way through the home
defence to feed Hageman to score in the corner equalising the score. Eccles eventually edged ahead bizarrely from 5m scrum on their own line winning against
the head ( mystery) the clearance kick being partly charged down but loop over the attackers head for Hageman to go the length of the piich (treading sand for the last bit) to score with Wilson converting .So to the crazy finish with just minutes to go Stockport scored on the blind side and added the conversion 31 points apiece but from the restart Eccles managed to retrieve possession Rowlands made ground Connor Bates followed suit with ball worked to Heseltine who round the defence to touchdown .There was still time in last minute for four scrums in the Eccles 22 before the thirds forced an error and secure victory.A sterling performance despite of 3 injuries and being under the cosh in the set pieces .maestro of the match went to Rowlands with mentions in dispatches to Hageman ,Heseltine and Bates. Bum note of the day Riddick (a tough call) for the early fumbles more than made up for them with a fired up display of tenacious tackling.
A quiz for you not difficult (equivalent to the Sun coffee time) which of the three Shawns on a mountain taking part today knocked on straight from a kick off Sean Baynes , Sion Rowlands or Shaun Barlow ?.
