The Black Pig remained forlornly in dock on February 13th with 7 of the crew required for the 3rd team duty .It had been planned even so to send the ships lifeboat with 5 hardy souls to fulfil the match away at Broughton but 11th hour casualties meant that there was not even the marrowbones left of this skeleton crew so the tie had to be conceded.
On the 20th the Black Pig limped out to sea for the visit of top of the table Bury 3rd with a complement of 12 assembled with a lot of last minute effort. No front row from the pirate crew meant unopposed scrums which allied to the reduced numbers saw the match played at a frenetic pace . The visitors made the early running and ran in two tries but if they thought that the fourths would keel over they were rudely disabused by the robust resistance they encountered. Bury eventually added a third try but in between Eccles could and should have with better passing and judgement bagged a couple themselves to leave the score at 19-0 to the visitors. The second half would show the commitment of the team as most of the pitch resembled the softer parts of Morecombe Bay and Bury were able to interchange their side from amongst their replacements .It took Bury until the latter stages outflank the home defence to add two more tries and secure victory .Despite the heroic defensive efforts their was disappointment in the home ranks that 3 or4 good scoring chances went begging. So one the day the Jolly Roger went to the whole crew Gary Hamer (skipper) the bilge rats Andy Waring,Tony Hudson.Dave Cusick.Paul White and the cabin boys Sam Delaney. Gary Dunham.Jason Davies .Connor Graham and the Spenser ‘s Rick and Sean
The 27th saw the other side of coin for this season has seen more ups and downs than a bellringer’s rope (got to be polite in print) ravaged by non availability the pirate ship did not even have enough to crew a dinghy so conceded the home game due against Old Aldwinians. It was also learned that 4ths skipper Paul Newton who has played 2nd/3rds all season due to front row shortages and stood down from the captaincy recently due to this impractical situation suffered a very severe eye injury playing for the 2nds we wish the very best at this troubling time. What the rest of the season holds for the 4ths we will have to see .The weekly trawl for players continues if you have not been contacted it is by accident not design so if thats you get in touch.
