Yesterday we received the sad news that Life Member and former President Ernie Crookell had passed away in hospital. He was 88 and had been in ill health recently.
Ernie joined the club in the early 1950s and gave over 60 years service in various roles. He was one of the first people bestowed the honour of Life Member in 1984. He served as President for a record 16 years, only stepping down in 2015. During that time he hardly missed a game, hosting the men’s opposition on a Saturday and supporting the ladies and colts on a Sunday.
Ernie was well known and loved across both the rugby and local communities, as evidenced by the outpouring of condolences in the last 24 hours; “they don’t make diamonds as big as bricks” was one particularly poignant message.
The funeral (burial) will take place on Wednesday 7th September, at 10:20, at Agecroft Cemetery. Afterwards there will be a celebration of his life at the club where we hope many people will come to share many happy memories.
