Oldham 4th 10 v Eccles 3rd 34 20/04/2013

A consolation for the third team with two defeats in the last two weeks missing the chance of claiming the League 4 East title but making it third time lucky to clinch runners up spot and promotion an agonising oneE point behind champions Bury.It was a hard fought victory in a lively and rumbustious match with Eccles making the most of their chances to sieze the day. The attacking intent was obvious from both teams straight from the kick off as was the fact the tackling would be committed and unforgiving .Eccles looked the likely early scorers but were kept at bay the home defence but had to be vigilant as Oldham too had a few chances but after a barren opening quarter Nick Hageman used his speed to get past the cover defence to squeeze through on the wing and speed from halfway to score. Eccles then had to defend a number of attacks and did well
to limit Oldham to a single drop goal before working their way upfield where Stuart Greaves powered through to score and Scott Morton converted.THe thirds seemed to have secured a good advantage as Thompson and Morton combined to set up Mike Lewin to burst and score with Morton adding the extras but the sin binning of Whitehead for alleged persistance offences at the ruck meant more defensive work for Eccles despite an interval lead of 19-3. Poor tackling after the restart saw Oldham claw the score back to 19-10 leading to a period nervy and scrappy play before assert some semblance of dominance as attack broke down and Eccles broke from within their 22 with Hageman again scorching off to score the try. West then calmed matters muscling in from a ruck to score amid strains of Andy Stewarts Donald weres your trousers (heavens knows why) and with time moving on Mike Lewin finished the scoring with another try. A fine effort from the team and the whole squad throughout the season who have had their ups and downs but came through at the end as the collective spirit and team bonding shone through .
