Shortly before Christmas the Men’s Third XV were withdrawn from their league after failing to raise a team for the fourth time this season. This comes as the result of a very difficult season so far for the men’s section, with playing numbers decreasing at all levels due to retirements, injuries and other circumstances. It is obviously very disappointing for us as a Club, but while it is tempting to becry ‘the demise of social rugby’, instead we are looking to how we can re-address this situation as soon as possible.
All players, regardless of ability or experience, are very welcome at the Club this season, and every season. For the remainder of the year all interested parties, existing or new, should contact the Second XV captain, Alun Davies, on 07791 411263 / firstname.lastname@example.org. Players will be able to get game time for the Second XV, and as numbers grow we will arrange friendlies for the Third XV against other casual teams. This will allow us to re-enter the Third XV into league rugby next season. Alun will be supported by former Colts Coach, Chris Gaffey, and Club Legend, Henryk Getz, as well as the rest of the Coaching Team and Club Committee.
While results on the field have been challenging, the support structure for players has never been stronger. Players have free access to the Club’s well-equipped gym. Physios attend the Club three nights a week, offering treatment and rehab advice, which is fully paid for by the Club. Training sessions, on Monday and Wednesday evenings, are led by a trio of experienced coaches in John Parrott, Glen Cahill and Simon Donovan, allowing sessions to be broken down into smaller focus groups. And our partnership with O’Neills is providing smart new kits for all teams.
There’s still a lot of rugby to be played this season. Hopefully we will see you as part of it.
