The Ladies got their season off to a strong start with a comfortable win over near neighbours Altrincham-Kersal.
The opening few minutes of the game were a scrappy affair with both teams looking a little rusty. But after Natalie Gill opened the scoring, crashing over from short distance, Eccles looked less nervy and soon found their form. With the forwards working hard around the pack and backs looking dangerous at every opportunity it wasn’t long until points came. Igemi Ekoku crossed the line twice, Natalie Gill picked up her second and there were also tries from Lisa Campbell and Alex Stokes. With conversions shared between Vickie Merrick and Claire Knapp the score was 40-0 at the half.
In the second half personnel were moved around to test out more of the combinations that may be required later in the year. The play wasn’t quite as flowing and just three tries, a third from Igemi Ekoku and two from Claire Knapp, were added to the scoreboard. But with impressive debuts and returns from new and injured players the exercise was certainly worthwhile. Final score 55-0. Debutant Jenny Whittle, playing her first game of senior rugby, was named Forward of the Match, and Claire Knapp was named Back of the Match.
League action starts this week for the Ladies as they make the long trip to Newcastle-upon-Tyne to face Novocastrians. They’ll return to Gorton Street on Sunday 15/09/13 when they face Birkenhead Park.
