Not a great performance today from Eccles who welcomed Blackburn RUFC to Gorton Street for the second fixture in this years Junior Colts preliminary fixtures, going down to their 1st defeat of the season.
Very much a patched up starting fifteen with a number of players playing out of position to accommodate the absentees; a situation that soon became compounded when both Dan A and David S suffered neck injuries. If anything the move to uncontested scrums benefitted Eccles as Blackburn were more powerful and technically adept in the scrum.
Eccles were unfortunate not to take an early lead as Matt W penalty drifted wide of the posts. Shortly after Keiron R found himself ball in hand and inside the Blackburn five metre line but poor support work from the Eccles pack and robust defending from Blackburn denied Keiron the try.
The full time scoreline probably reflected the performance of the two sides however it could have been so very different. Every try that Blackburn scored came from either team errors, individual errors, poor decisions or indiscipline from the Eccles players.
Whatever sport you play, the only way to irradiate errors and improve your decision making is through training as unit and I am almost certain that three weeks into the season we haven’t had even a full fifteen players at any training session, let alone a full squad. Come lads – make the effort
Blackburn looked strong throughout the game but only put the game away during the second half when the injuries to David and Dan completely changed the shape of an already patched up team. Eccles never let their heads drop and will look forward to meeting Blackburn RUFC again
We swap our usual sausage sarnie and half a bitter for smoked salmon blinis and champagne next week as we visit leafy Clay Lane, home of Bowden RUFC

One yellow card today, issued to the Blackburn Nr 8 for a late hit on Matthew W
Eccles Man of the Match was awarded to Shea S by the players of Blackburn RUFC. His tireless running, continually taking the ball in and gaining valuable yards. Eccles awarded their EMoM to the Blackburn number 15 who had a great game from the 1st to the final whistle.
The rogue sausage, floating semi-submerged in the sea of tomatoes like a U-boat in Café Eccles brought a few strange looks today
Joe B again played up an age group to give the lads a lift and I for one think he had an outstanding game
Another player who had a good game was Keiron R playing at prop for the first time rather than his usual number eight
Many thanks to Darragh McGrath for taking charge of todays game
No cheese slice for Joe R despite tackling a player who didn’t have the ball
Great to see Alex T down at the club today – it would be so much better if we could see him in the navy & white. Come on Alex
There is a rumour knocking about that local TV celebrity Ellis P is rejoining – how good is that then!!
Training is Monday & Wednesday and we still have the privilege of training with the first team squad – it doesn’t get much better than that at any club
