I am very sorry to report the death of former playing member Dr. John Aspbury, whose funeral I attended last Saturday morning (23/01) in Oswaldtwistle. Older members may remember John who joined the club in the late 1970s when working at Hope Hospital, along with fellow registrars Ian James and Don Clegg. They played together, mostly for the third team, for several years. Ian sadly passed away 20 months ago. Don hasn’t been seen for a while but remains a member of our 200 club!
John was large, bearded and a genuine friend to many, including myself, with an amiable and forthright approach to life. He became a very successful Consultant Anaesthetist at Bolton Hospitals, where he led and developed the Intensive Care Unit. He was a highly regarded, caring professional and became President of Bolton Medical Society.
I wore my club colours at the funeral and had a drink to his memory. I would encourage you all to do the same!
