The First XV finished second in a tough opening game against higher league opposition. As you would expect at this stage in the season both teams made quite a few mistakes but it was the Yorkshiremen who found their rhythm first with some lovely interplay in the backs opening up the Eccles defence. As the game progressed both teams started to remember how to play and there were good periods from both sides. Andrew Frost forced his way over for Eccles’ opening score with Sam Vincent adding the extras.
In the second half there were obviously some tired bodies causing more gaps to appear which the away team were happy to exploit, running in eight tries in total. But Eccles didn’t go down without a fight and Freddie Oakey showed great pace to run the length of the field to score.
Lots to work on before the season starts in earnest but also a lot of positives to be taken from the game, especially with lads stepping up to First team level for the first time. Attention now shifts to the visit of Leigh on Saturday, at the more usual kick off time of 15:00.
