Eccles vs Heaton Moor U15s

A gloriously sunny Autumn day welcomed our visitors from over the border in Cheshire. Heaton Moor RUFC have traditionally given Eccles a good game with them turning a close fought 1st half in to a 31 – 10 victory in last season Blacksticks fixture.

Buoyed by our win against a strong Rochdale side last week it had been hoped that Eccles would be alive to todays challenge but it was our visitors who had the best of the first half running in 4 tries, 3 within a very poor 10 minutes for Eccles. Eccles pressure on the Heaton Moor try line did prove fruitful and eventually resulted in the awarding of a penalty try to Eccles to leave Eccles training by 17 points at half time

Half Time 7 – 24

Eccles started the second half as they should have done the first and it wasn’t long before Dan G  forced his way over to score beneath the posts following some great pressure from the Eccles forwards including debutants Ed & Ellis who had come on from the bench. Matt W completed the exercise with a straightforward conversion for the additional 2 points

14 – 24

From the restart Eccles found themselves back under pressure and what appeared to be a good kicked clearance was comfortably collected by the Heaton Moor full back who weaved a dance through the Eccles lines until Brad P made the tackle 10 metres from his own try line. This however wasn’t enough as Heaton Moor regathered themselves and passed their way across the full width of the pitch to score in the corner.

14 – 29

Eccles dusted themselves down and got the game restarted. Indiscipline and frustration at decisions from our visitors would prove costly as a series of penalties awarded to Eccles saw Heaton Moor pushed deep into their own half. Jack W showed fantastic skill, power and pace to weave a run down the flank before being grounded by the Heaton Moor defence but not before releasing the ball which eventually found its way to Alex H. Alex showed tremendous strength and determination to drive his way through the last line of defence and score Eccles third try under the posts and leaving another simple conversion for Matt W to leave Eccles trailing by eight points at Full Time

Full Time 21 – 29

Another good twenty one points for Eccles but lapses in concentration and one or two poor decisions by our lads saw Heaton Moor finish on top. Heaton had the best of the first half but Eccles rallied and were on top for most of the second

So far we’ve had a very encouraging win and a a disappointing loss but the lads will be on their game next week for our first Blacksticks fixture at home to an improved Bolton side who comfortably beat Bury by over 50 points last week
