Eccles welcomed Liverpool to Gorton Street, for their 2nd encounter of the season. If the last meeting was anything to go by, then Eccles U9s knew they were in for a physical game in the contact arena.
After 8mins of rugby, there was still no score, due to excellent ball retention and tackling from both sides. Matthew, Ernie and Nicholas showing great work rate in defence, putting Liverpool’s attackers under constant pressure.
Finally, seeing some space on the wing, Joe broke through the Liverpool line and scored a try in the corner. Matthew and Ernie followed this up by showing they’re attacking abilities and both scoring tries, bur Liverpool would not lie down and retaliated with two great tries of their own with the acting scrum half going on a mazy run, which ended with a neat side step and over the line he went. Half time score 3-2
The message at half time was simple, pass the ball down the line to get away from Liverpool’s big lads and use our pace on the wings.
Louis, playing his first rugby game for Eccles, opened the scoring in the 2nd half. Then Mikey went off on a couple of his elusive runs, that we have all come to expect, and scored two tries. Some good passing from Liam resulted in tries for Ernie and Patrick. Eccles lost a bit of concentration in defence and again allowed Liverpool to hit back with a few tries of their own.
The comeback was stopped when man of the match Joe, scored a hat trick of tries with some direct running. Well done Joe a great performance.

The 2nd game was always going to be tighter affair, with Liverpool fielding a fresh team, but Eccles carried over the work rate and intensity from the first game into the second. This pressure resulted in giving possession to Eccles, that allowed Nick to barge through a stubborn defence. Liverpool hit back with two tries of their own making the half time score 1-2.
Battling on in what was a great game of rugby, with all to play for in the 2nd half. Eccles knew exactly what they had to do to win the game, get the ball to the wing.
Up stepped Liam who supported the ball carrier and then found some space down the wing to score his try. He wasn’t finished there, Liam did some great passing with Quaraishi to put him in for a try. Score 3-3
Mikey set off on a run that had all the Liverpool defence chasing him down, fortunately they couldn’t get near allowing Mikey to score the winning try for Eccles, making the final score 4-3 and earning Mikey a well deserved Man of the Match Award.
Well done Eccles Under 9s, showing great work rate and teamwork in both games to beat a good Liverpool side. It was good to see so many different try scorers over the two games. Let’s carry this over into the game against Trafford MV.
