Eccles U8s v Trafford MV U8s. 27th Oct ’13

Eccles Squad; Danniel (Capt). Ollie. Ethan. Charlie. Finn. Sohan. Alfie. Jonnie. Mathew. Jack. Maxwell.

Dare I say, things looked a little more organised on Sunday (and not just from the Eccles coaching staff too!) as TMV were made welcome to Gorton street in yet another closely fought series of games as is the habit with these emerging teams.

Again, being blessed with good numbers, MV provided the opportunity for consecutive games. As DoR Bates watched over one game, Coach Fleming officiated in the other. Despite playing with a man less, Eccles soon realised where their offensive game was at it’s best with Mathew and Ollie occupying the middle of the park, this gave the wingers plenty of chances to step inside for the ball then drift out wide to hit the spaces. Ethan scoring after a mazy run before Ollie swivelled his hips to score on the line.

MV were always well distributed in defence, and in attack; they showed they have plenty of ability also. Captain for the day Ben showed his team the way forward to put their winger into space down the touch line for a great try.

The second period saw Eccles realise that they had to step up a gear. Ethan again ghosting across the top of the surface to score his second. Charlie then got into the game once he realised there was plenty of space out wide for the first of his two on the day. Sohan continues to improve and took some superb tags. Ollie overcame his personal battle with his opposite number before he bagged his second and sportingly sharing a handshake on the whistle.

MV then scored possibly the try of the season so far. With Eccles in posession and pressing up the middle, the space between the centres and the winger was a stretch too far for the attempted pass. The MV center spotted it early and an incredible interception saw him score unchallenged. Well done that man!

The second game introduced more of the same from MV, but the Eccles boys had got into their game and moved play deep into the MV half. Ollie hit the floor hard and popped up a lovely ball to Mathew who put Charlie away up the right wing. Ethan playing through the pain of blisters got his hat trick then Ollie finished his game with four on the day. Mathew, a rock as ever, missed very few tags.

The DoR reports that in our other games, the score line of 6-5 to Eccles and 7-5 to MV was just about right.  Both teams seemed to lose concentration at those vital moments with dropped balls over the line and running into touch! However, the tag count from Finn, Maxwell and Alfie kept MV at bay with Danniel and Jonnie doing their thing up the wings to keep the score line moving.

Thanks to Jez, Mark and Smudge and the excellent spirit in which all the games were played.

This Sunday 2 November; Training at Eccles. 10.30am. HALLOWEEN PARTY AFTER TRAINING! (honestly!) Fancy dress and pumpkin competition. Goody bags for the kids…. Enjoy!
