Eccles Squad; Ollie. Danniel. Ethan. Alfie. Finn. Adam. Ben. Mathew. Sohan. Seb. Johnnie.
What a day for playing running rugby! This was a series of games that tested each and every player with plenty of turn-over ball, excellent tries and all played in tremendous spirit and commitment! This, without two of our regularly players also!
It was also a ‘first’ in that at the interval in the opening game against Bolton, the score was level at 0-0! This was testimony to the efforts and ability shown by both teams. The ‘contact area’ was aggresively contested after the Coachs’ (and the DoR’s) words about playing hard from the first whistle, sank in with the boys. It was only after the turn-around at half time that the score board started climbing; Danniel dodging the tag-takers to score neatly in the corner. Bolton twice replied instantly after re-organising quicker than the Eccles boys at the re-start, to nail two quick tries. Johnnie then benefitted from Mathew forcing a turn-over following the mandatory 5 tag count as Eccles defended another Bolton attack. Sohan ploughed through the mddle before feeding Johnnie who took a leaf from Ethans book to run low and score in the Bolton corner.
The intensity was great to see from both sides, as Ollie… feeling hard done by a ‘foot in touch decision’ denying him a score… channeled his emotions (after some counselling from the DoR!) to twist and turn on his way to the line! the game finished at 5-6 to the visitors! Great contest.
The ‘other’ Eccles team – under DoR Bates – took on Widnes over on the ‘North Pitch'(!) with Ethan picking up where he left off from the last game; bagging 3 tries. Seb, always eager to get his hands on the ball, cut a great line across the surface before stepping off his outside foot to finish like a true winger! (have we found the next Dave Nichols?!)
The next game on ‘South Pitch’ was between Eccles and Boltons ‘other’ team and again played with a tremendous committment. Despite playing with two players less, the Gorton St boys looked to move the ball quickly to the wings where Ben and Ethan waited! This was only Ben’s second game but he played like he’s been with this team all season, getting over for three (in this game). Adam was another playing only his second competetive game, but like Ben, looked comfortable on the ball and claimed a brace of tries. Finn did brilliantly in his organising of the defensive and attacking lines and complimented his game with a neat try. Sohan, Mathew and Alfie constantly forced the Bolton players to take the ‘long route’ in proving to be solid in defence and taking tags… great mid-field play.
DoR reports that the second Eccles – Widnes game saw some tremendous tries with the pick being Ollie’s score. Johnnie took the ball into contact before sending a looping pass (well, he said he meant it!) over the Bolton players head for Ollie to time his run onto it perfectly, into the gap and score unchallenged.
A big thanks to Paul from Bolton and Mike from Widnes and we look forward to returning this fixture next season.
