Eccles u18s girls v Barnsley Match report

Barnsley vs Eccles Match Report – by Katie Purcell

This Sunday saw an excellent victory and all round great rugby match for Eccles U18 girls at Barnsley Rugby Club.

The first half started slowly, Eccles attacking but the ball was quickly turned over in a rook. The defence was good and an excellent display tackles were made by all players.

As Eccles reclaimed the ball, it was swiftly passed through the backs hands to Leah Morley, outside centre, who ran in the first try, under instruction from number 9. From this point onwards Eccles controlled the game. With a speedy try from Antonia Riley straight down the wing Eccles had a strong lead. With Detysha (Tysh) Harper, Ellie Wallwork and Stephanie Berry proving strong in rooks and malls, the ball was again passed to Leah Morley who powered through and ran in her second try. Aimee Wallace, playing 10, skilfully spotted a gap in Barnsleys defensive line and with a quick dummy pass, broke through and scored right between the posts!

At the end of the first half, although clumsy when recycling the ball, Eccles had played well defensively and exceptionally in attack.

In the second half, Barnsley made a strong come back and ran a couple of trys in. However Eccles tightened up their defence and soon they were back on form. Scrum half, Megan Price ran four trys in! Stepping round the opposition quickly and precisely, making it almost impossible for Barnsley to tackle her. Beth Cox on the wing ran a stunning try in straight down the wing, handing off any player in her way. A second attempt by Beth saw her take off down the pitch, almost reaching the try line but was tackled by a Barnsley winger, but Katie Purcell was following Beth in support play and quickly picked up the ball and scored the try. Tysh followed by ploughing her way through their defensive line and as she touched down her first U18’ try she said ‘my mum owes me a pound, a pound for every try!’ Finally with minutes to go before the end of the match Eccles made a big push, with excellent play by forwards, Rebecca Roden and Eleanor Navin running great lines of play, the ball was passed to Georgia Cunliffe, inside centre, drove through Barnsleys line and scored right next to the posts.

All in all with 12 trys scored and 8 conversions, kicked by Aimee and Georgia, the final score was 76-28 to Eccles. An amazing win to start the season.

A special well done and thank you to Stephanie, Beth, Antonia and Rebecca who played for Barnsley for a short while to help with their numbers.
