I love Sunday’s. You spend the first 30 minutes managing the car park, pumping balls, finding a whistle, paper & pen (didn’t know i was reffing and thanks Flem) then flattening out the mole hills and trying to work out where the line markings are. At least I got to use my new watch with the timer on for the game.
What followed was very good from Eccles given the performances towards Christmas which were below par.
Eccles did very well in most aspects of the game – with some intelligent kicks from Tom,Callan and Daniel to get possession. The tackling was much better as was the rucking.
Ashton were very spirited and kept on till the end and the game was more even in the second half.
Eccles started well…….Billy’s words still ringing in their ears…….and Daniel scored after a series of rucks.
Next Callan scored a try which capped a very good all round performance – in particular his discipline and tackling one of which resulted in his early departure late in the game.
Rory stepped up next with a long range try along with Lewis getting another
Finally in the second half Jacob picked up from the base of a ruck 5 metres from the AuL line to crash over in spite of the three defenders hanging off him.
Joe converted 3 of the tries.
The whole team played well especially the pack who rucked well, picked up the ball at the right time and turned over a lot of ball.
Ashton for their part kept going till the end and were competitive till the end. The key difference was that Eccles were more aggressive in defense in the first half. When we play with urgency and get off the defensive line early by blitzing up we create mistakes in the opposition by putting them under pressure.
Thanks to the parents, coaches and players from Ashton in making it an easy game for the referee
Training Tuesday and Wednesday – brings boots and trainers please.
