U13 travelled to Ashton under Lyne in typical weather for this part of the world. It was very cold with the wind blowing off the Pennine hills. The location didn’t help as three of Eccles players managed to get lost, eventually arriving just before kick off.
As is so often the case Eccles allowed AuL to score two early tries before they got going. They had two fast centres which Eccles backs allowed too much space. After a few words from the coach the lads were up quickly and managed to shut down the threat. This then allowed Eccles pack to began to dominate with some good offloading and quick ruck ball eventually led to a two tries in the first half for Eccles. One an outrageous dummy from prop Joe that saw him crash over from 10 metres. Just reward for his effort in training and a very solid game today.
There were good displays from Niall in the first half who saw a lot of ball and presented it well in the contact. Daniel and Archie continue to build a solid partnership at fly half and centre both made good runs and off loaded.
Tom at scrum half saw a lot of ball too and made runs, distributed well to his forward runners and hit the odd ruck or two in the progress.
Callan, as always, kept the team moving forward.
Special mention to Brendon. I thought it was going to be to one of those days with him. After his “I’m not a hooker” tale a few weeks ago, he then managed to have his foot stamped on, the ball hit his ear and he couldn’t get warm. This was all in the warm up. However he was to prove us wrong with good runs, making the ball available in the contact – “by George he’s got it” – and distributing to his support players. Best game he has had this season and without another sub who could play hooker he did very well.
As we moved into the final plays AuL got the ball from a turnover at Eccles scrum in their own 22 metre and ran the full length of the pitch. This is an area where we came unstuck against Heaton Moor. We need to be smarter at stopping the fast lads ghosting around us.
All in all it was a good team effort with everyone making a contribution.
And the rain held off.
Well done to AuL on their victory.
