The first match of the new season for the new Eccles U11s matched the hosts against local rivals Sedgley Park on a warm and bright Autumn Sunday morning. With a couple of new players joining the team over the summer (Reece and Jack), the boys took to the field looking to kick start the season with a win.
The first quarter started well enough, with George opening the scoring early on after a mass brawl pushing towards the Sedgley line, with George getting his hand to the loose ball at the vital moment. A good start, but old habits die hard – Sedgley scored almost immediately, with a sprint from deep from Sedgley’s best player on the day.
A new feature for the 2014/2015 will be the #Wadeisms…aptly named by the man himself for a great shout out to Henry – ‘Get in…. and stay out…‘ Wade was confident that Henry new what he meant. Looking forward already to the next #Wadeism…
Quarter 2 saw a complete change in the team, an advantage of the large squad we have. Luke H put Eccles ahead with a great solo run from a penalty, Will B added a third try with a skilful sidestepping run that completely undid the Sedgley backline. The end of the Quarter saw Eccles score a fourth try, Harvey taking advantage of some sloppy Sedgley passing with a strong run and dive for the line.
The third quarter continued with Eccles in complete control. Henry scored a fifth try with a great determined solo run, and this having just been told off by his Dad for not listening…Wade quickly acknowledged Henry’s try, but still told him to listen next time!
Billy scored Eccles’ 6th try, picking up after a good run from George and some great passing by Jake (a regular feature of the game), before George scored his second try of the match, which he celebrated with little air kicks, to which James said ‘you been watching Strictly?’. Another try from George (and a celebratory roll) saw Eccles close out 40-5 ahead. A mention should also go out to Duncan and Will R who both had great games.
Quarter 4 saw two early replies from Sedgley to make the score slightly more respectable, but then George added his 4th try of the match, and celebrated by running backwards with jazz hands! Sedgley ended the match with the last try, with the final score at 45-20.
Adam summed up the performance by saying that everyone played their part and that the quality of the performance stayed the same even when the teams were changed around at the end of each quarter. A great start to the season, with some terrific tries, brilliant celebrations and worldly-wise parent observations – cant wait for the next match!
