Eccles U10s v Heaton Moor (Home) Sunday 19th February

Eccles v Heaton Moor (home)  Sunday 19th February 2014

Eccles and Heaton Moor had played out a thrilling 25-25 draw earlier in the season in the away fixture, and now Eccles were looking to follow up with a victory in the home return. The weather again had seen very heavy rain throughout the week and we were restricted to playing on the overflow car park – still, we got the game on!

Again, Eccles were bolstered with a full squad and were able to field two teams over four quarters of match play.

In Quarter 1, Eccles started well and were soon 1-0 ahead with a try from Billy. However it was clear that Heaton Moor were here for a game and they started to dominate possession and soon pressed home their advantage to take a 2-1 lead. Not to be outdone, Billy equalized for Eccles just before the end of the quarter to restore parity at the break.

The second quarter started with Eccles fielding a fresh team. Although I use the word ‘fresh’ lightly, as I think the boys were still under their duvets counting sheep for the first 10 minutes of the quarter as Heaton Moor completely brushed Eccles aside to take a 6-2 advantage.

The original starting line up returned for Quarter 3 and began to make a fight of it again. First Will R and then Billy scored tries for Eccles, before Heaton scored again. Billy scored his 4th try of the match just at the end of the third quarter to bring the score to a more respectable 5-7.

Back came the other string of Eccles players to take the field with their sleep finally wiped from their eyes, and eager to put a shift in, with Billy added back in due to injury to one of the Eccles players. The team were playing much better than before which was good to see. However, Heaton started really well, and put the game beyond Eccles with two quick tries taking the score to 5-9. Eccles did respond and fought back well with good tries from Sam and Billy, with a further Heaton try sandwiched in between.

Eccles hadn’t played badly, but they never really got into a game that Heaton were very much ready to play. Hopefully the boys will learn from this and will be back to their best soon. A great game from Billy with 5 excellent tries – well done!
