Eccles First XV Vs Blackburn Match Report

Eccles travelled to old foes Blackburn looking to pick up their first league win of the season. Recent games between the two sides have been close and Eccles were relieved to welcome back evergreen Griffin to solidify the scrum.

Eccles made a much more positive start to the game and immediately started going through the phases forcing the home side to concede a penalty that fly half George Oakey converted. Blackburn were quick however to equalise with a penalty of their own. The pattern remained the same for much of the first half with Eccles dominating the possession without making too many opportunities. A further penalty each was traded and the teams turned around at 6 apiece.

eccles has further opportunities to score penalties but these were either missed or turned down in  favour of kicking off the corner. While the set piece was much improved over the fare served up over the past couple of weeks Eccles never managed to threaten from the driving maul that has been a hallmark over the team of recent vintages.

It was Blackburn however who were to score next stretching the Eccles defence to score out wide and this was quickly followed by a second try for the home side.At 16-6 down it looked like a tall task for the blue and whites to get aqnything from the game. Eccles however continued to push and following opportunities at the scrum they spread the ball wide to where Luke Cullen screamed for Ross to “poke her through”, thankfully he ignored this making a short pass to Cullen to straighten and go through untouched.

Eccles continued to push for the winning score put tired bodies around the ruck allowed Blackburn to turn the ball over when in promising positions. With time running down It very much looked like Reece james had scored the try to tie the game up but with the referee unsighted he felt unable to give the try. The referee blew for full time shortly after to end the games, Eccles taking only a losing bonus point.

A much improved performance but the coaches must be praying that they can get the best XV on the park as soon as possible and start picking up some wins.
