ECCLES Colts 14 v Warrington 20
Douglas Valley 04.05.14 – 3.30pm k.o. Att: 103
Frank Morgan U19 Lancashire Cup
The Cream of Cheshire took on the Lancashire Hot Pots in the final of the Lancashire Cup. I know what you are thinking but if Hereford United can win the Welsh Cup and Israel the Eurovision then why not? They are only boundaries anyhow. So two of the best under 19 teams in Lancashire played out this eagerly awaited final, the last on the show card of a day of finals.
Lenny the self-acclaimed stud was missing a couple of studs and Dave Hargreaves sat studying the oppositions dance moves before the off but after the whistle Eccles started well and on the front foot. A good break from Aaron Booth but as met with a stern defence but the Lancashire side look organised in the rucks and stifled any Warrington flow pressurising them early on. Another Aaron break through following up his own chip was collected by Warrington but moments later Eccles had a chance to open the scores as their pressure told putting the Wires on the back foot and giving away a penalty in front of the posts albeit 30 yards out. Aaron clean kick through 3-0.
Eccles then failed to keep hold of the ball and a mistake in the backs allowed Warrington to get quick ball out wide and over. Kick hit the post so the lead was only two points 3-5.
The scrum, possession and line outs were fairly equal, Warrington had pace but Eccles were organised and powerful, winning a line out midway and driving well 20 plus yards but couldn’t make the advantage tell. Warrington’s line out worked well and quick ball out but a great hit from Lewis and then Luke stemmed any attack.
Eccles’ defence held well on their line and turned over the ball, gaining quick ground running deep into Warrington’s half giving the Cheshire team problems, who were scampering back to cover their lines but giving away a penalty for holding on in the process. Aaron coolly kicked giving Eccles a half time lead 6-5.
The second half appeared to ring the changes, Rob came on to the cry of ‘Discipline Bob!’ two words not usually stringed together and Danny with his taped up broken head seems to be ready for battle but then off again.
Another early penalty given away by Warrington allowed the trust boot of Aaron to increase Eccles’ lead although it was aided by the left hand post. 9-5.
There was a touch of the Showaddywaddys about Eccles’ defences, a few good hits!! (well Under the moon of love and hey rock n roll were class!!) Connor tackled well, Warrington broke but Lewis tackled well only to be sin binned for an infringement I think only the ref saw. Warrington narrowed the lead with a penalty conversion 9-8. Connor was a brick wall again but Eccles not clearing their lines allowed Warrington to use the men over to score their second try. Kick was wide 9-13.
Eccles tried to overturn the scores immediately but the final pass let them down with men over and the ball passing through good quick hands.
The score board doesn’t lie the game was close and it was going to be a flash of great skill or a mistake that would decide this game.
Unfortunately it was the later for Eccles, mistakes at the back giving the ball away allowed Warrington in and add to their lead with a converted try. 9-20
Eccles pressed and Warrington kicked to clear their lines, Matt tackled well, Paddy supported and fed Aaron who side step created the gap and he ran through to give Eccles a deserved try. The excitement of the try disturbed Aarons boots as his conversion went wide 14-20.
Although the lads were disappointed coach Dave was really proud of the performance.
A big thank you to the lads for entertaining us this season and also thanks to Dave and Nic for all there hard work…
