Hand Lane 12.01.14 – 2.00pm k.o. Att: 88
Well it was like going back in time or Leigh as I like to call it… Eccles usually play well and come away with nothing, most folk go into Leigh in with nothing and come away unwell…!
Leigh were kicking from left to right or if you were on the other side of the pitch right to left and were dressed as bees. The subs for the home side were dressed as council workers and as those employed by the council, lots of them stood around doing next to nothing!
Eccles started well and won an early line out Dave Hargreaves collecting the ball against the throw. Lewis found somebody his own size to pick on putting in early tackles to set the tone.
Harry as keen as ever intercepted a Leigh pass to serge through only for the ref to bring the play back for an earlier infringement, which the home side decided to try and put the first points on the board and go for the sticks from approx. 30 yards out, however the kick was placed wide. An early let off for Eccles who’s discipline needed to and did improve.
Joe ‘Whizz’ Wisdom went in well to tackle to stop any home momentum as the Eccles pressure stop Leigh from gaining any ground and giving the ball away easily.
Eccles scrum saw Aaron break and open up a gap but the ball out fell short stopping an Eccles attack but it was only moments later on 25 minutes when the away side finally broke the Leigh defences. Eccles won the line out deep in Leigh’s half and a powerful drive gained speed as Lenny peeled away to pounce over, week he fell really looking like he’d ran out of steam! Aaron duly added the extra points, 7-0.
Harry and his new Tom Daley shorts, grabbed the ball back from Leigh as they pushed for a response and a second clear opportunity was denied by a great tackle from Connor.
As the second half got into its stride Curt decided to drive forward but forgot the most important thing… the ball…
Possession swapped hands more times than Dave Bates and Andy Waring swapped shiners as it became a game of knock ons and dropped passes.
Simon reminded his counterpart the score by trying to shove 7 fingers down his throat as play broke and Harry powerfully ran to the 25 yard line only to be caught and for the ref to blow for a pen to Eccles. Aaron extended the lead with his boot 10-0.
Aaron’s boot was brought into action again to kick deep into home territory, the line out resulting in a good drive but Leigh came up with the ball only to be panicked into a loose kick. Before the kick could be caught by Eccles’ retreating player a push from the Leigh pursuing player left the referee with no option to give the yellow card. However the comment as Leigh’s offender left the pitch, something to do with the ref’s twitch and a winker changed the colour to red.
None of which affected cool foot Aaron as he slotted the pen home to increase the lead and widen the fly half’s smile beating his class mates with ease. 13-0
Leigh broke into Eccles half but Dave H tackled well to keep the home side to nil.
A very disciplined display from Eccles who never lost control and hit Leigh hard and strong not allowing them to gain any momentum. Great displays all round, Connor didn’t moan, Lewis didn’t bleed and Aaron kicked well but Lenny ‘the blade’ gave a man of the match performance.
