Hare Lane 17.11.13 – 2.00pm k.o. Att: 29
Eccles youth travelled south for a tough arranged match against a team riding high in their top league. Numbers were low and players playing in unusual positions, Ross on the wing, Tom Waring as scrum half and Dave Bates as Coach..!
Chester’s famous Zoo was only a stones throw away and a near sighting of an escaped Panda turned out to be Andy Waring….
Jordan was brought in to warm the bench as Eccles started the match, like Nick’s good looks, going downhill.
Bob was in early from the kick off and nearly collected the ball from the follow up and the Eccles tackles flew in and gained the away team the early possession. Ross, Harry, Joe Whizz and Tom Waring all put in good heavy tackles to hammer down Eccles’ intent and let the Cheshire side know they were in for a tough afternoon.
10 minutes in a Chester kick to clear bounced and Aaron was quickest to react (just like his dad… at the food counter!) the full back sprinted clear and was support well by Tom Waring who ran in to add the first points to the board. Aaron added to the total.
James collected and ran through the middle and was backed up by the chasing pack. As Chester tried to break Joe W tackled well, it seemed every Chester attack was quickly held up by Eccles getting back in numbers.
Ross thwarted another attack anticipating the man over and not allowing the pass out wide. Eccles were pinned in the home sides half but needed to make the pressure count as the Chester defence held and they cleared. Another great Eccles line out, collect by Dave Hargreaves allowed the visitors to drive but yet again unable to turn this into precious points.
The moment Chester had the ball in hand the chance to get out of their own territory fell as the ball was passed forward.
The second half started as the first finished deep in the Chester half and as the skies blackened as much as Andy Waring’s eyes.
4 minutes into the half the line out superiority paid off with a forceful drive which saw Lewis capitalise and going over. Aaron’s conversion was as poor as Curt’s excuse for not playing and barely left the ground. 12-0
From the kick Jordan’s mazy run was just that as he got lost! And then to further his misery was penalised when throwing for the line out for not being straight…!
Chester broke clean through midway through the second half only to be tackled superbly by the last man Aaron the result of which popped his shoulder out only to be okee cokee’d popped back in again on the pitch. This meant another shuffle in positions for Eccles and the unrest affected concentration levels allowing Chester back into the game, a charge down kick on the away teams line was touched down by Chester’s on coming attacker. Kicked 12-7
Joe Whizz showed his tackling abilities again near the end as Eccles defence held on, Connor especially with great turnover from a Chester attack.
Great all round team effort without the numbers in the squad to call on to make changes. Joe Whizz typified the spirit as Eccles went at Chester from the kick off. His tackling and to come into the stand off roll were a Man of the Match performance.
