Eccles Fusiliers union forged

Saturday 19th August, Eccles RFC welcomed the 1st Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers for a special #Somme101 commemoration pre-season friendly, in recognition of the club’s recent Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award expedition to the WWI battlefields in France. As befitting the tribute to former Eccles players who did not return from overseas service, many young men from last year’s Senior Colts team – Callum Baines, Adam Christey, Joe Gaffey, Cameron Higgingbottom, Rory McGrath, Mike Shaw and Josh Waring –   played a part in the 1st XV game, which was played in a great spirit with the hosts loaning the visitors players and the camaraderie continuing in the clubhouse post match. Following a presentation by the DofE group on their research into Eccles RFC history; the abandonment of Rugby in September 1914; and their expedition to the Somme in the footsteps of the Salford Pals, the club were presented with a Fusiliers Regimental shirt by Major Pugh.
