Eccles 4th 17 v Liverpool Collegiate 4th 32

A weekend off from league rugby the fourths entertained Collegiate in a friendly fixture in what proved a competitive but good spirited encounter. A late cry off meant that Eccles could not field a full front row meaning uncontested scrums leading to a very open match. The visitors stunned Eccles with a drop goal (an almost unheard of occurance in fourth matches) in the opening minutes and tried to peg the home back with the kicking game. A try in the corner (hotly disputed ) put Collegiate in the driving seat and then a failed attempt a goal by the visitors was fumbled twice behind the Eccles line and duly pounced on to extend that lead. When it seemed as if Collegiate run away with the game Eccles fought back with centre Connor McKinney crashing over after strong work from the forwards. Even better was to come as no8 Richard Westran stormed through to score his first try for the fourths with Jordan Bromley converting to put Eccles just a point adrift. Eccles suffered a double whammy a stand off Nick Delaney with a knee which puts him out for the season and the opposition snatched a converted try to lead 20=13 at the interval. in the second half Collegiate extended their lead before Steve Lillee powered through to score a fine try . Eccles could not make further inroads into the deficit and the visitors rounded off the scoring with a final try. A spirited display from the fourths in good match with centre Teesider Gary Coghran take the plaudits for a strong running display as man of the match. The Wigan pie award this week falls into hands of prop Andy Coop for the fumble resulting in Collegiates second try
