Eccles 4th 15 v Bowdon 4th 26 15/03/2014

The fourths managed to assemble a team after many weeks of inactivity for a rearranged league fixture with prospect of a challenging afternoon and the way the visitors started the portents were decidedly ominous. Eccles weathered the early period and settled down to actually have the territorial advantage causing the match to develop into trial of strength but no scoring for the opening twenty minutes. Bowdon eventually clicked the scoreboard into action as their number 8 powered through for the opening try and then added a second as the inside centre sped away on long range break .Eccles did managed to hit back with neat work for winger Tom Steedman to socre in the corner to leave them just 12-5 in arrears at the interval. The thirds started brightly almost scoring but then being penalised four times in succession to be pinned back in their own half. Bowdon began to get a stranglehold on the match due to the influence of the two first half scorers and the scrum half creating the openings which led to two well taken tries. Just as it looked as if the floodgates would open the action got a bit spicy keeping the referee on his toes and Eccles managed to gain a toehold in the match by gaining field position and then pressing the visitors line with prop Jacob Henderson tanking over in the corner. Things got better for the home side as Ashley Nasir started a move and was then on hand to finish diving over out wide. Though Eccles had reduced the deficit they never looked like bridging the gap to seize winning points having to settle for a sparky display in defeat. Backrow Lennie Huntley who came on as a replacement was adjudged Eccles man of the match for solid tackling and forward breaks whilst also picked up the Eccles cake of the match for his less than inspiring display in the post match challenge where the aforementioned confectionary
completely defeated his feeble efforts .It was good to see Tom son of Simon (now retired due to the dreaded props back syndrome)
take up the Rose mantle making by donning his boots and smaller jersey than his did who was different kind of racing snake.
