Eccles 3rd 35 v Rochdale 4th 3 01/10/2016

The thirds bounced back from last weeks heavy loss with a fine victory against the odds in an eventful home encounter. The opening exchanges were edged by the visitors who nudged ahead with a penalty. A scoring spree of three tries in 15 minutes by Eccles broke a stalemate in middle of the half . The first came from a pinched ball at a line out on halfway passed along the line where Cameron Oates weaved and sped his way through the Rochdale defenders to tough down and he was on hand for the second latching onto Jimmy McGuigan ‘s  neat chip to repeat the dose.Lastly came the  one from Riddick Manaye who took a pass from Jimmy at pace right on the gain line to shrug off defenders and score under the posts with Jimmy completing all 3 conversions. The fates then chose to conspire against Eccles first Dave Cusick retired with a leg injury then Andy Coop saw yellow for 10 mins  followed by Jason Davies also retiring with a back injury .Somehow the thirds down to 12 men survived until the interval to lead 21-3.Resumption of play saw Coops restored to action plus the addition of player to leave Eccles  with 14 men for the duration of second half.A solid defensive display thwarted the visitors intentions and surprisingly the match continued until well into latter stages without any further scoring. It took a piece of opportunism from Tom “Lazarus” Rose to get the scoreboard moving for after the referee had blown for a penalty near visitors 22 both froze awaiting for whom it had awarded with a signal that it Eccles Tom quickly tapped to hare away to the line .to touchdown. Eccles put the top hat on proceedings with try from a line which passed along line at speed even though skipper Gary Hamer was involved for Jay Wilson wriggle his way over with Jimmy M notching a full house of conversions.A fine team effort primarily in defence with individual skill providing the cutting edge in garnering points .Despite the outstanding performances of Jimmy M and Cameron the maestro of the match went to Lazarus Rose whilst the bum note of week went to Jimmy M ( have tasted blood so being pernickety) for his attempted drop goal in front of the with three supporting attackers outside him.
