Eccles 3rd 25 v Leigh 4th 17 26/11/2016

A fog rolled in from Chat Moss to coincide with the of Leigh who arrive one man short so had the services of our skipper Gary Hamer to bring them up to strength. The first 20 minutes seemed to mirror the   weather as the teams tried to assert supremacy only enlivened by a high tackle on Tom Wilson by Gary. Finally it was the 3rds who broke the deadlock as a needlessly concede  5m scrum by Leigh saw the ball fed out to Wes Harrison to crash over with Tom adding the extras..This should have been added to as Matt Appleby  made a 50m break and having seemed certain to score began to tread water (a case of too much pop the night before) and his pass to support a metre from the line came a liitle too late and hit the knee and was adjudged a knock on was the try was disallowed .A better case for a try came close to half time as Adam Prendergast was charging for the line was hauled down just short onto his back rolled and over reached over but the try was ruled out for a double movement to leave it 7-0 to the 3rds The second half despite the gathering gloom suddenly produced a explosion of points with Wes adding a second try early in the proceedings cutting back inside but finding a path through the defence to out pace the cover to touchdown with Tom converting. Gary meanwhile taking advantage of the mist had been employing the “Ibbo” tactic (sneaking a yard or three at ruck etc) and been warned nearly collected a yellow card which being against his own team would have merited a hefty forfeit . Tom extended the lead with a penalty but Leigh hit back with try in the corner which was hotly disputed it appeared it may have been dislodged in the act of scoring only the tackler and the “scorer” know the truth of it maybe? .Eccles pressed back into Leigh 22 gained a penalty opted fro the scrum from which Adam ran through the defenders to finally have a deserved try .22-5 was due reward for the dominance the 3rds had exerted but wobble in the final 15 minutes nearly undid the good work as tap penalty resulted with a try in the corner reduced the visitors arrears followed by another after a step inside the defensive cover to make 22-17.A jittery 5 minutes followed before a penalty from Tom saw the 3rds confirm victory and second place in the league. A good performance with forwards with debutant Pete O.’Dymer in the ranks working hard with Adam Prendergast getting maestro of the match with his strong “go  forward bursts though ususal suspects were noticeable for their graft. The backs looked sharp and endeavoured to expand the  play with Harrison ,Wells and fullback Murphy (despite his early effort to catch a high kick which even with the aid of a trawl net looked doubtful  ) particularly dangerous on the counter.
