Eccles 2nd 26 v Wigan 2nd 19 28/01/2017

The 2nds  banked a home win which was harder than it should have for after building a good lead almost contrived to squander it .An early try (5mins) from a long kick inside own half from Andy Stimpson which was chased up by winger Rory McGrath set Eccles on their way  but was another 20 mins another score .Shortly after Carl Wilkinson and the Wigan  winger had received yellows for spot of pugilism and couple for strong runs from wing Alan Davies that 2nds added to their tally opting for scrum penalty the was sped across the backline where Pete Heseltine fed Lewis Wilkinson who dived over in the corner and Reece James  converted (12-0) . Into the last period of the half a line out take and drive saw Jack Weaver at the bottom of pile to claim the try with Reece adding the extras(19-0 .Instead of a comfortable ride to half time the restart off was fumbled Wigan gathered fed the ball across the field and their centre found a corridor to the sticks unhindered(19-7 and worse was to follow as an Eccles attack on halfway broke down Wigan countered with their winger racing down the touchline and should have ben stopped but slow cover and poor defensive decision making allowed him to score in the corner.(19-12) .Nerves were settled just before the interval as another line out catch and drive saw Weaver bag his second try and Reece on target again (must have bought some magic boots) (26-12) .2nds started the second half on the front foot but missed on opportunity to extend the lead squandering a 3 on 2 overlap  but were lucky that Wigan did the same minutes later .65 mins elapsed before another scored opportunity for the 2nds an optimistic 40m penalty from Reece which did not threaten  the posts as Wigan who were monopolising possession began to increase the pressure   on the home defence. A long  Reece kick from the 22 temporarily lifted the siege but a 60m break almost unlocked the defence but desperate scrambling back saved the day resulting in a kerfuffle which saw Huw Ohri and a Wigan played seeing yellow .The pressure continued with Rory racing back to win the race for kick through touching down to prevent a try in the corner As  Eccles held on Nick Morrison also got a yellow blamelessly as the referee seem to pick the nearest body for whatever the offence was. A late charge from penalty was stemmed but another given and the Wigan prop (who had an earlier interception try chance ruled offside ) kick for the corner from the winger to touch down for the final play 16-19).A definite game of two halves in first the 2nds looked in control have should have led by more and in the second though under the cosh defended solidly whilst only  twice troubling the visitors half but meriting the win on balance. Despite a 43-0 away loss at Kendal which was mitigated by having a weakened 14 man squad and then suffering with losing Tom Rose with broken leg the 2nds bounced back to win at Vale of Lune 24-21 and with this victory  sit comfortably in 6th position  in the league just 6 points behind the top two and well ahead of the bottom two
