CONGRATULATIONS to Leon Simpson, Connor James, Reece Walker and Ben Moseley who represented Lancashire U17s yesterday in a 19-10 victory over Yorkshire.
The match played at Sedgley Park was a terrific encounter between two talented and spirited county squads. Reece Walker played flanker and did an excellent job as captain, rallying his team and vocal throughout.
Yorkshire had the better of the first 10 minutes. Lancashire weathered the storm and on 17 minutes attacked, culminating with 2nd Row Connor James bursting on to a flat pass from his scrum half at pace to score the first try of the match; which was converted: 7-0
On 24 minutes Lancashire were awarded a scrum inside Yorkshire’s 22. Lancashire’s front five provided the platform for the No.8 to exploit the blindside before sending right winger Ben Moseley racing to the line to score the second try in the corner; Fly-half Leon Simpson stepped up to take the touchline conversion which narrowly missed: 12-0.
Yorkshire fought back, pinning Lancashire into their own territory for the remainder of the first half and most of the second half. On 41 minutes, after a period of sustained pressure, Yorkshire’s winger scored a try in the corner despite the heroic tackling effort of the Lancashire fullback: 12-5. On 65 minutes, Lancashire scored the decisive try of the match, with the blindside picking up a bobbling ball close to a breakdown and sprinting 40 metres to score; Leon Simpson landed a magnificent touchline conversion: 19-5.
Yorkshire to their credit continued to pound away at the Lancashire line and scored a try on 69 minutes with a forward picking up at the back of a ruck and driving for the line. Final Score: Lancashire 19 Yorkshire 10
All four Eccles players were a credit to their county, making significant contributions to the occasion and the result.
