As the rest of the Nation shivered, the Gorton Street arena was bathed in glorious winter sun yesterday for the annual Christopher Tickle Cup, played between the blue and white hoops and red shirts of Eccles RFC senior section. The match featured some top quality rugby from both sides with several fine trys, some spectacular handling, touchline interference, many marvellous mis-timed tackles and a couple of uncontroversial cards to Matt Parkinson and Chris ‘Costa’ Fortune all making a contribution to the showcase event. Will Parkinson and Greg Wilson scored the late winning tries for the Hoops via the new law variation ‘next two trys wins’. Dave Nic took the man of the match award, he didn’t play well, he just took it…he’s not called Nic for nothing. Bri Griffiths was the oldest participant at the ripe young age of 70, with Danny Aspinall the youngest at 17.
The fund-raising activities continued in the clubhouse after the game: The pitch n putt competition went to Freddy Oakey, who obviously wasted his youth on the krazy golf circuit; Teetotal Andy Waring won the bottle of Jack Daniels, demonstrating expert tossing action; and Marie’s Maidens took the title of Quiz Masters following the disqualification of the BooBatesBadBoys team for illicit googling. Big thanks to referee Nick the greek Popadopalous, to Marie and all the gals and to the crowd of around 50. Players, spectators and participants made generous donations to The Christopher Tickle fund raising £450 towards spinal injuries research.
