Junior Vase Final

Gorton Street                 28.04.13 – 1.30pm k.o.

Att: 112 + 4 dogs (was 6 but Dutty needed more burgers!!)

Some young players dream of a journey to Twickenham, getting to a final and playing at the arena of rugby, well Eccles young guns had reached their first final and a trip to….. Gorton street beckoned…  Look on the bright side, home advantage and if Connor forgot something, like his kit for example it wouldn’t be too far to retrieve.  Whilst Connor ‘No Kit’ Bates went to fetch his gear we had time to see Andy Brunt do his lines, never seen a touch line with an S in it!!  And we sampled the ‘Dutty Butty’ (before the dogs had disappeared),

Eccles needed a good start which saw them press the Altrincham try line in the first minute but failed to keep the momentum.  Altrincham Kersal began to take charge and on 10 minutes quick ball from a well worked scrum looked to gain them a try but a last gasp tackle almost foiled them but had extra men over to run in the first try.  Failed to convert 0-5.

Good Eccles line out and ball won by Dave Hargreaves saw Eccles drive deep into AK territory, Connor removed one obstacle from the mawl but it looked to be pulled down thus preventing what looked like a great position.

Moments later a great piece of opportunism from Tom Waring as he intercepted a pass to break through but Private Godfrey… Sorry the ref pulled play back for an earlier infringement.   Altrincham broke again and looked certain to score with more tackles missed than Luis Suarez misses games only for a great stop from Evan Williams.

All the play was in the Eccles half and AK made this tell, again winning the fiercely contested scrum yards out turning to the blind side and over in the corner which was well kicked 0-12.

HT 0-12

From the restart AK followed the ball up well and kept on the front foot, gaps were beginning to show in Eccles usually solid defence and no tackles made allowing Altrincham easily over to increase their score.  Kicked 0-19.

Eccles were starting to work the ball well but missed passes and dropped ball was costing them momentum and allowing AK to control the game.  Carol was on to see to an injury and looked like she needed a physio by the time she had run the width of the pitch.

62 mins Altrincham won yet another scrum and the quick thinking, quick footed scrum half danced through and Eccles had no answers. Another converted try 0-26

With minutes left Eccles looked for a consolation score but it was Altrincham and Kersal having the last say going over from yards out.  Great kick again 0-33.

FT 0-33

No one stood out as Eccles failed to come to the forefront in a big final, unusual display from a team who will give any team a game.  Evan Williams is usually given a man of the match award for his quick feet and pacey tries but it was his defensive display and try saving tackles that earn him it today.

A big thank you to Dave Bates & Nic Delaney for coaching the lads throughout the season, also Carole Pass and Dave Heath.

Finally thanks to the lads for all your efforts, well done…….
